The Quick Guide To PVP

There are many articles about PVP in World of Warcraft so i’m going to keep this one quick.

PVP strategy is very different to PVE, there are no strategy guides that will tell you where to stand and no addons to tell you how much time you got before the next attack ability is used on you.

PVP strategy is random and your fights will be different each time.

Your brain is going to be your biggest weapon by knowing your class abilities inside and out. I would recommend you also know the other classes to, know thy enemy.

“If you know both yourself and your enemy, you can win a hundred battles without a single loss.” – Sun Tzu’s Art of War

Four keys to effective PVP Strategy:

  • Learn to understand your fight zone i.e. melee or ranged
  • Calculate effective damage reduction abilities
  • Know when to stun or use any CC ability
  • Have a clear focus on several situational attack rotations

Awareness of your surrounding is vital to your PVP strategy as there are classes who have very powerful opening attacks and can stack a rotation before you’ve even pressed a key.

Warriors – Will Charge in leaving you open to some heavy attacks.

Rogues – Will Stealth up on to you and either stunlock or hit n run/rinse repeat.

Hunter – Puts his pet on you which if PVP type will root you (Crab, Spider most popular), then he/she is free to shoot you even adding a slowing ability called Concussive Shot.

Paladin – Retribution types will hit you with Repentance from range then move in with some devastating attacks.

Priest – These will DOT and run to you. Once in Range they will cast Psychic Scream and finish you off.

Warlock – Will usually DOT from range and send in the Demon pet. Some will Fear you, some have DOT’s so powerful they can just run away. Those that don’t use Fear have a very powerful attack rotation.

Shaman – Most open with Flame/Ice Shock then what comes next is either Lava Burst or a melee attack. Those that melee may summon Spirit Wolves.

Mage – Can Slow you, incapacitate you e.g. Sheep and unleash hell on you if you don’t see these folks first.

Druid – The common two that tend to get you first are Cat Form or Moonkin Form. Both have high burst DPS, Cat is melee and Moonkin is range.

Death Knight – Most open with Icy Touch and maybe send in a Ghoul pet. They either pull you into their melee range with Death Grip or use Chains of Ice to slow you down and move into your melee range.

There are many other opening methods just keep aware and know which of your defensive abilities to use in your PVP strategy if you are attacked first.

If you can get an opening attack you need to calculate quickly your PVP strategy e.g. no other opposite faction around then unleash hell and if there others well you know your skill/gear so decide fast.

Don’t despair if you are not doing very well with your PVP strategy. There is an important statistic that you will need to build by acquiring the right gear, Resilience. You may have the skill the right PVP strategy however you may not be able to survive another players damage output due to low health, low resilience etc…

Whilst your levelling you will come across those who stop XP gains on their character to allow the time to acquire the PVP gear. The biggest amount of lower level Twinks (what these PVP’ers call themselves) i’ve seen is at 60.

So learn the classes, find their weaknesses, develop your own PVP strategy and build your gear.

Know your role for the PVP situation and in the larger battleground scenarios don’t be a loner stick in groups (Rogues and Druids are the exception if capturing towers).

Most importantly have fun.

I will add more PVP guides later however feel free to use the comments to add more ideas and expand on this quick guide to PVP.

If you want to know more now as in right now then there is something called PVP Bible written by a successful PVPer.
