Want to know how to install on to your WordPress site (or other CMS types) the cool looking WOWHead tooltips??
Then follow the below instructions.
- Download the latest version from
here. - Unzip the contents and upload the wowhead folder to the base directory of your WordPress installation.
- Point your browser to http://yoursite.url/wowhead/install and complete the installation procedure.*1
- Download the
WordPress Plugin and install it as usual. Don’t forget to activate it!*2 - Open ./wp-content/themes/{YOUR THEME}/header.php1).
*
Somewhere inside the head tags add:
<link href=”./wowhead/css/wowheadtooltips.css” rel=”stylesheet” type=”text/css” />
<script src=”http://static.wowhead.com/widgets/power.js”></script>
<script src=”./wowhead/js/armory.js.php” type=”text/javascript”></script>
*
Save header.php and reupload to your site as necessary. - That’s it, you’re done!
Important Notes:
*1 – You will need your cpanel login information to hand as well as your MySQL table details. What I did was create a new MySQL table and this will allow you to keep a close eye on how much data is being parsed. When you do this you will need make note of the new username, new database name, and new database password.
Once you complete the install successfully you will see this screen:

*2 – You may get a ‘fatal error’ message when you activate the plugin about renaming or deleting the install folder. DON’T PANIC!! Just use your cpanel file manager, go to the wowhead folder and what I did was just rename the install folder to ‘BKinstall’. Activate the plugin and all should work.

Nice program there.
I installed it on AzerothCookbook.com and while it’s not as easy as the standard WoWhead tooltip install it seems to be much faster. I assume it connects to WoWhead once an item is called, then caches it locally?
You should mention that the user will need to create a database and make note of the username, database name, and db password.
I did hit that fatal error and renaming the install directory worked fine. I had to leave my config file and zones folder set to 777, which seems like a security hole? Any way around that?
Is there a version that will work on static sites?
Thanks
Cheers AC i’ve updated the post to remind about noting the new database details. Static sites from what i’ve read cannot have this added but then i’m no programmer and i’m sure some boffin will find a way.
I got my config file set to 0644 and folder at 0755. I didn’t need to change the permission during install so not sure what happened with yourself.
I would suggest that you contact the wowhead tooltips project itself and see if they can help. The link is at the bottom of the post.
Many Thanks
The Mentor.
Wouldn’t a static site that can run php scripts be able to run this? I sent an email to the project, so we’ll see.
I’ll try again with the permissions, but when I made the test links they had to be 777. Hmmm…
Anyway, thanks for the recommendation.
Ok, my mistake. When the page is loaded there is a delay while a connection to WoWhead is made. When I first looked at the links, to check the tooltip, it said, “no response from server,” which I interpreted to mean bad permissions.
Oops.
Ok, it’s now 644 and 755. Thanks again.
